Prof Molly Stevens has been elected a Foreign Member of the National Academy of Engineering for her work on materials-based approaches to tissue regeneration and biosensing at the 2019 NAE Annual Meeting in Washington DC. The membership acknowledges engineers for outstanding contributions to engineering, research and technology. Only 18 Foreign Members were elected in 2019.

Raman spectroscopy protocol analyses individual nanoparticles published in Nature Communications

The Stevens Group’s latest Nature Communications article entitled “Single Particle Automated Raman Trapping Analysis" reports on how Raman spectroscopy can be exploited to analyse nanoparticles on a single particle basis, without the need for labelling steps or sequential imaging steps, using a technique called SPARTATM. Stevens Group members Jelle Penders, Isaac Pence, Conor Horgan, Mads Bergholt, Chris Wood, Adrian Najer, Ulrike Kauscher and Anika Nagelkerke all contributed in a terrific team effort. Well done!

Molly Stevens celebrates 10 years as Full Professor

Prof Molly Stevens celebrated 10 years as a Full Professor at Imperial College with a lecture, entitled “Materials-based adventures in bioengineering: engineering organs and detecting disease earlier”, on 25 May 2018.
Prof Stevens became a full Professor in 2008, only 4 years after joining Imperial College in 2004, as one of the youngest Professors in Imperial’s history. Her Inaugural Lecture was delivered to a packed audience of >400 invited guests, including collaborators, colleagues, alumni, current group members and family. Over 100 alumni travelled from all around the world to attend the event.
Stevens showcased numerous exciting outcomes from her research programme, covering areas from materials-based innovations, regenerative medicine, biology, medicine, to biosensing and diagnostic technologies.

Molly Stevens is Director of the recently awarded UK Regenerative Medicine Platform (UKRMP) "Acellular Materials / Smart Materials - 3D Architecture" Hub. This Smart Materials Hub involves 9 other UK-based Universities and aims towards materials-based approaches that support regenerative therapies. Ultrasensitive point of care diagnostic test for HIV

Stevens Group hosts LIYSF in 2017

For over 8 consecutive years, the Stevens Group again hosted the London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) on July 28th. The LIYSF comprises gifted young students, who saw a lecture from Anika Nagelkerke and demos on electrical monitoring of tissues (Mars Harrison), malaria (Adrian Najer), cardiac cells (Limor Zwi-Dantsis), Raman spectroscopy (Conor Horgan), acoustic manipulation of cells (James Armstrong), nanomaterials/biosensing (Chris Wood), and polymer chemistry/materials (Chris Spicer). The group is featured on the LIYSF’s 2017 promotional video and blog.

Nanoneedle-based approach demonstrates extraordinary delivery capabilities in cells and tissues

The Stevens Group’s latest Nature Materials article entitled “Biodegradable silicon nanoneedles delivering nucleic acids intracellularly induce localized in vivo neovascularization” reports an innovative nanomaterial-based device designed for intracellular delivery of sensitive cargoes. The paper by Chiappini et al in collaboration with HMRI describes how nanoneedles based on porous silicon can facilitate the delivery of nucleic acids (e.g. DNA and siRNA) in living cells and tissues non-destructively.

The RSC have selected a project based on the CLIM technique developed by Dr Sergio Bertazzo to study interactions between cells and biomaterials for sponsorship on Marblar, a new online platform (co-founded by Stevens group PhD students, see below) for finding applications for new scientific discoveries.

To fit within the running time of the programme some of the conversation was cut and I would like to therefore reiterate here added special thanks to the incredible collaborators and research group who make all the advances possible (full details are on this group website). Also Stevens et al, PNAS 2005, would not have been possible without the co-authors from that paper especially Prasad Shastri, Bob Marini, Dirk Schaefer and Bob Langer. Mark Rocco awarded Whitaker International Scholarship

Mark Rocco was awarded a Whitaker International Scholarship to conduct research in the Stevens Group for a period of 18 months. Oliver Mahony wins multiple awards

Oliver Mahony was awarded one of five College Student Awards for Outstanding Achievement (valued at £250) in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements on Great Britain's rowing team. Oliver is currently in the Great Britain Men's Lightweight Pair and has raced at the 2009 World Cup meetings and the World Cup in Poland, where he finished 5th in the world.
In addition to this, Oliver won best oral presentation at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Biomaterials in Lausanne, Switzerland, for his paper "Silica-Gelatin Hybrid Scaffolds with Controlled Degradation and Mechanical Properties".
