The report, entitled “Modular and Versatile Spatial Functionalization of Tissue Engineering Scaffolds through Fiber-Initiated Controlled Radical Polymerization”, was led by Ms Rachael Harrison and also includes Stevens Group members Joseph Steele, Robert Chapman, Adam Gormley, Muzamir Mahat and alumnus Lesley Chow and describes a dual-functionality scaffold with a cell-adhesive surface and an opposing antifouling non-cell-adhesive surface.

Nanoneedle-based approach demonstrates extraordinary delivery capabilities in cells and tissues

The Stevens Group’s latest Nature Materials article entitled “Biodegradable silicon nanoneedles delivering nucleic acids intracellularly induce localized in vivo neovascularization” reports an innovative nanomaterial-based device designed for intracellular delivery of sensitive cargoes. The paper by Chiappini et al in collaboration with HMRI describes how nanoneedles based on porous silicon can facilitate the delivery of nucleic acids (e.g. DNA and siRNA) in living cells and tissues non-destructively.

Manuel Mazo awarded Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship

Dr Manuel Mazo has been awarded a very prestigious Marie Curie International Incoming Fellowship by the European Commission. In his two-year project “Design and validation of a conductive polymer-based system for the functional maturation of human pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes as a platform for drug testing” he will pursue his research on generating a device based on conductive polymers that will drive the maturation of human stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes.

Their talks were given at the sold out event, sponsored by BioLegend, Royal Society of Chemistry and the Department of Materials, and focused on Designing Materials to Heal the Body and Targeting Cancer with Engineered Nanomedicines. Congrats to Dr Sergio Bertazzo for sponsorship of CLIM technique!

The RSC have selected a project based on the CLIM technique developed by Dr Sergio Bertazzo to study interactions between cells and biomaterials for sponsorship on Marblar, a new online platform (co-founded by Stevens group PhD students, see below) for finding applications for new scientific discoveries.

Sergio Bertazzo’s technique involves a unique method of combining two forms of microscopy, described in our paper published in Nanoscale titled ‘Correlative light-ion microscopy for biological applications’.

Thomas von Erlach and Gabriel Mecklenburg Co-found spin-out Marblar

Marblar, launched at the end of October, is a new crowdsourcing site that aims to help scientists turn discoveries into innovative applications by publicly discussing potential uses for patented discoveries made in research laboratories that as yet may not have led to real-world applications. Stevens’ group members Gabriel Mecklenburg and Thomas von Erlach are two of the founders of Marblar. The venture has already attracted £371,000 of backing from technology-investment firm IP Group and has been profiled in Nature News.

Prof Stevens was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s “The Life Scientific” with Professor Jim Al-Khalili. To fit within the running time of the programme some of the conversation was cut and I would like to therefore reiterate here added special thanks to the incredible collaborators and research group who make all the advances possible (full details are on this group website). Also Stevens et al, PNAS 2005, would not have been possible without the co-authors from that paper especially Prasad Shastri, Bob Marini, Dirk Schaefer and Bob Langer. Congratulations to Pelin Çandarlıoğlu who was a runner up in the FILM Image Of The Year 2011 competition. The competition is judged on the aesthetic quality of a scientific picture taken on a FILM microscope. Pelin's entry, “Hot Air Balloon Ride” - a voyage to bone formation, was one of the top 12 entries and she received a beautiful A3 calendar with the winning pictures.

Mark Rocco awarded Whitaker International Scholarship

Mark Rocco was awarded a Whitaker International Scholarship to conduct research in the Stevens Group for a period of 18 months. He has recently completed a post-doctoral honorary research position at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia under the auspices of a National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) fellowship. Previously, Mark received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY USA.

Oliver Mahony wins multiple awards

Oliver Mahony was awarded one of five College Student Awards for Outstanding Achievement (valued at £250) in recognition of his outstanding sporting achievements on Great Britain's rowing team. Oliver is currently in the Great Britain Men's Lightweight Pair and has raced at the 2009 World Cup meetings and the World Cup in Poland, where he finished 5th in the world.

In addition to this, Oliver won best oral presentation at the 22nd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Biomaterials in Lausanne, Switzerland, for his paper "Silica-Gelatin Hybrid Scaffolds with Controlled Degradation and Mechanical Properties".

Dr Caterina Minelli awarded June Wilson Memorial Award

Dr Caterina Minelli has won the 2009 June Wilson Memorial Award. The prize, valued at £1000, is awarded to a female scientist who has shown excellence in the fields of tissue engineering, biomaterials, pathology or related disciplines. The award was set up by Professor Larry Hench in conjunction with the London Materials Society [LMS], in honour of his late wife's achievements in the field of biomedical materials research. As the winner, Dr Minelli received the honour to present her research work at the 2009 June Wilson Memorial Lecture of the London Materials Society on 12th March.

BioCeramic Therapeutics Ltd, a spin-out company from Imperial College co-founded by Dr Molly Stevens and Professor Robert Hill, receives its first financing round.

This funding will enable the company to press forward with its plans to develop a range of bioceramic and nanostructured scaffold products, designed to help patients suffering from musculoskeletal conditions.
